How Much Is It To Stay In A Hotel In Tokyo? The Data Speaks…

how much is it to stay in a hotel in tokyo (2)

Tokyo is home to some of the most out-there & craziest hotels in the world. However, there are also some beautiful hotels that can be found in Japan’s capital, where the priority on luxury or customer comfort is clearly evident. But, does this mean it’s expensive to stay in Tokyo’s hotels? I did a fairly sized amount of research to find the exact answer to this question. So then, how much is it to stay in a hotel in Tokyo?

The average cost to stay in Tokyo is around ¥21,528 ($196.19) per night. This number is based on the average cost of hotel stays per night within the top 5 areas for tourists to stay in Tokyo. You can find much lower and much higher prices per night, however, this is the total average price per night to stay in a hotel in Tokyo.

My research did not stop there though. I continued to search to find the average price per night for each of these top neighbourhoods for tourists to stay in. I then compared each hotel that I took data from, to give you the best idea of what hotel you should stay at. Completely based on your needs and requirements!

How Much Does It Cost To Stay In A Hotel In Tokyo?

You may be asking yourself how this data was collected and how this average price per night was calculated

I collected data from hotels within the top 5 places that tourists stay at when visiting Tokyo. I then calculated the average price for each of these areas, which gave me the average price per night to stay in a hotel for that particular neighbourhood.

Area/Neighbourhood Average Price Per Night (¥) Average Price Per Night ($)
Shinjuku ¥21,975 $200
Shibuya ¥17,685 $161
Nihonbashi ¥23,661 $216
Roppongi/Minato ¥24,233 $221
Shiodome/Shinbashi  ¥20,050 $183

As you can see, Tokyo and its top 5 touristy areas can be very expensive to stay in. However, just because these average prices are high, doesn’t mean that you can’t find much cheaper options.

Tokyo is a bustling city with many different economic levels, both for residents and tourists. This means that there are plenty of insanely expensive hotels, along with cheap ones too. Therefore, the extreme prices of the more expensive hotels can greatly affect the average price per night for that area or all of Tokyo as a whole.

For example, the immense price for a room in the Ritz-Carlton Tokyo stands at a whopping ¥102,804 ($937) per night! The Ritz-Carlton Tokyo is located in the area of Roppongi/Minato, therefore, this insane price will have a much bigger impact on the average price per night of the neighbourhood.

To get around this, I took my research even further and prepared recommendations for each area based on the factors that may play a role in helping you decide what hotel to stay at.

How Much Is It To Stay In A Hotel In Shinjuku?

The average price per night to stay in a hotel in Shinjuku is around ¥21,975($200), which is relatively high…

However, Shinjuku is home to many amazing 3-star rated hotels that are fairly affordable if you are planning to stay in the area. From free wi-fi, free breakfast, fitness centres and room service; some of the hotels in Shinjuku really are worth their price.

Hotel Name Star Rating Avg Price Per Night (¥) Avg Price Per Night ($)
Tokyu Stay Yotsuya 3 ¥32,008 $292.74
APA Hotel Higashi 3 ¥8,646 $79.08
Studio Inn Nishi Shinjuku 3 ¥17,748 $162.32
Tokyu Stay Shinjuku 3 ¥14,108 $129.03
Shinjuku Garden House 3 ¥30,188 $276.09
Hilton Hotel Tokyo 5 ¥26,699 $244.19
Rhodes Kagurazaka Hotel 3 ¥10,012 $91.57
Bespoke Hotel Shinjuku 3 ¥25,030 $228.92

As you can clearly see, APA Hotel Higashi would be the cheapest option to use if you are staying in the Shinjuku area. Not only is this option cheap, but it is also great value for money. Including many extras such as free wifi, air conditioning, an ensuite bathroom with free toiletries, a flat-screen TV and many more that you can check out here. If you are wanting to stay in a hotel in Tokyo on a lower budget, I would highly recommend staying at APA Hotel Higashi.

However, if you have a bit more cash to spend on accommodation, I would certainly think about considering the Hilton Hotel Tokyo, as it is one of the cheapest 5-star hotels to stay at in all of Tokyo.

Key Takeaways

My recommendation for staying in Shinjuku is fairly simple. If you are on a tight or smaller budget, stay at the APA Hotel Higashi. If you have slightly more to spend on a hotel, then the Hilton Hotel Tokyo is a no-brainer. You can’t go wrong with a 5-star hotel in Shinjuku, after all.

How Much To Stay In A Hotel In Shibuya?

The average price to stay in the Shibuya area is roughly around ¥17,700 ($117) per night. Therefore, Shibuya seems to be a more affordable place for tourists to stay.

Shibuya is one of Tokyo’s well-known areas for ease of access due to its huge train station, which is one of the busiest in the world.

This area also provides for amazing fashion & shopping, which is great. But, what are the hotels like, and how much do they cost?

Shibuya has a large number of great hotels that are actually really affordable. If you found that Shinjuku was too expensive to stay at, take a look at the hotels below; as Shibuya is only about 25 minutes away via public transport!

Hotel Name Star Rating Avg Price Per Night (¥) Avg Price Per Night ($)
Shibuya Stream Excel Hotel 4 ¥32,008 $292.74
Shibuya Tokyu REI Hotel 3 ¥8,646 $79.08
Shibuya Granbell Hotel 3 ¥17,748 $162.32
Hotel Wing International Premium Shibuya 3 ¥14,108 $129.03

The Millenials Shibuya 2 ¥33,070 $302.45

Prices vary based on what room, the time in advance of booking and the time of year that you visit.

Although the average price per night in Shibuya is significantly lower than Shinjuku’s, there are still some really expensive options on the list. In fact, the cheapest hotel in Shibuya is pretty much the same price as the cheapest hotel in Shinjuku. Therefore, the average price per night in Shinjuku is only higher as there are higher star rating hotels that charge more. However, you can still find cheaper options in Shinjuku, so if you were hoping to stay there, it is still possible to do so on a tight budget!

Shibuya is a great area to stay in, and it has some cheaper and more affordable options for you to take a look at. This means that you can save some of your hard-earned money for the amazing shopping and fashion experiences that this city ward holds!

Key Takeaways

My recommendation for staying in Shibuya would be to book your stay at Shibuya Tokyo REI Hotel, due to its low price. Click here to check the rates for your stay at Shibuya Tokyo REI!

Despite the significant price drop compared to the rest of the list for the area, it is still 3-star rated and has many great reviews which you can check out here.

How Much Is It To Stay In A Hotel In Nihonbashi?

It is around an average cost of around ¥23,871 ($215) per night to stay in a hotel in Nihonbashi.

Standing as one of the main commercial districts in Tokyo, Nihonbashi should be on your list to visit if you love a good shopping experience!

As previously mentioned, Shibuya is also a great area to go to for shopping. However, it is a lot more clothing and fashion-focused. In Nihonbashi, you can find pretty much anything. From huge department stores, outdoor furniture shops, fine dining restaurants, wine shops, green tea stores and so much more; Nihonbashi is the perfect location to shop for the weird and wonderful!

But, does the cheaper average cost per night to stay in a hotel in Nihonbashi mean that the quality of the hotel is worse? Not at all. There are still some amazing hotels in Nihonbashi. In fact, it has more 4 & 5 star rated hotels in the area compared to Shibuya, which had a more expensive cost per night.

Hotel Name Star Rating Avg Price Per Night (¥) Avg Price Per Night ($)
Mandarin Oriental Tokyo 5 ¥62,492 $565
Daiwa Roynet Hotel Kyobashi 4 ¥13,836 $125
Hotel Intergate Tokyo Kyobashi 3 ¥9,731 $88

Mitsui Garden Hotel 3 ¥14,444 $131

Prices vary based on what room, the time in advance of booking and the time of year that you visit.

It is fairly evident to see that Nihonbashi does not lack when it comes to the quality of hotels in the area. There are numerous places of accommodation in this city district that are rated above 3 stars. This means that if you are someone who loves high-end shopping and high-end accommodation, Nihonbashi is undoubtedly the place for you.

However, just because the hotels are high-end, doesn’t mean that they come with extortionate prices. Not all of the time anyway. The Daiwa Roynet Hotel Kyobashi is an amazing option for those of you who want to shop til’ you drop, and in this case, you will be dropping into an amazingly comfortable bed within 4-star accommodation.

Key Takeaways

In my opinion, the very best hotel for you to stay in, with a budget in mind, would be the Daiwa Roynet Hotel, which is located in the Ginza area. For $125, you are getting a lot of value for your money. However, if you are a bit lower on budget, then a simple stay at Comfort Hotel Nihonbashi would do you no harm at all, and would save money for that shopping day out!

The average cost to stay in a hotel in Roppongi or Minato is around ¥24,495 ($222) per night.

Roppongi stands out as the go-to place for celebrities staying or living in Tokyo. The nightlife you find here is simply sublime. It is home to the best nightlife experiences you will find in Tokyo, and maybe even Japan as a whole

Prices vary based on what room, the time in advance of booking and the time of year that you visit.

Obviously, the first thing that stands out on this list is the crazy price for The Ritz-Carlton hotel. However, this hotel is mainly targeted at people who are either famous or have extortionate amounts of money. So unless you have more money than sense and want the very best hotel in all of Japan; let’s move on!

Considering how high-end Roppongi and its residents are, the hotel prices are not too expensive at all. In fact, this area is home to one of the cheapest 4-star hotels in all of Tokyo, the Candeo Hotels Roppongi

Key Takeaways

As previously mentioned, Roppongi has one of the cheapest 4-star rated hotels in all of Tokyo with the Candeo Hotels Roppongi. Not choosing this hotel to stay at would be madness! It is definitely affordable and is even cheaper than some 3-star hotels in other areas of the city.

However, if you really cannot afford this; then your best bet would be to book a stay at Sotetsu Fresa Inn, as it is the cheapest option in the area.

Furthermore, if you are insanely rich and want to experience the best of the best, a stay at The Ritz-Carlton will fill your stay with the luxury that a 5-star hotel should provide!

How Much To Stay In A Hotel In Shiodome/Shinbashi?

And finally, we have the second cheapest area to stay within Tokyo, with the average cost being around ¥20,235 ($183).

Much like Roppongi; Shiodome & Shinbashi are much smaller areas within the Minato City district of Tokyo. Shiodome is mainly a residential area with many apartments and skyscrapers full of offices.

This could be the main factor of why the area is so cheap to stay in. It is mainly made for residents, so there are not too many tourist attractions to be found here.

So, with this being said, why would you choose to stay here? To put it simply, if you are interested in shopping in Tokyo, this could be a great way to do so while saving some extra money. Both Roppongi and Nihonbashi are about a 30-minute walk away from Shiodome, these both being two of the greatest districts to shop in the city!

With this being said then, how much is it to stay in a hotel in Shiodome/Shinbashi?

Hotel Name Star Rating Avg Price Per Night (¥) Avg Price Per Night ($)
Conrad Tokyo 5 ¥34,993 $317
Park Hotel Tokyo 4 ¥24,495 $222
Karaska Hotel Premier Tokyo 4 ¥26,321 $239
Mitsui Garden Hotel Shiodome 4 ¥8,824 $80
Hotel Villa Fontaine Grand Tokyo 4 ¥13,693 $124
Shiba Park Hotel 4 ¥16,279 $148
Tokyu Stay Shimbashi 3 ¥28,907 $262
Candeo Hotels Shimbashi 4 ¥13,845 $126
The b Shimbashi toranomon 3 ¥10,041 $91
Dai-ichi Hotel Tokyo 4 ¥25,255 $229

Prices vary based on what room, the time in advance of booking and the time of year that you visit.

As you can see, the Shiodome/Shinbashi has a huge amount of high-quality hotels! There is a higher number of affordable 4-star hotels in this one area alone, compared to the rest of this list. Therefore, if you can sacrifice not being majorly close to the more popular tourist areas or attractions, you can get a lot of bang for your buck!

Key Takeaways

My strong recommendation for staying in the Shinbashi & Shiodome area would be the Mitsui Garden Hotel. My reasoning for this is simple. It is extremely affordable and is 4-star rated! Not only this, but it really is a stunning hotel with extras such as free wifi included.

You simply cannot go wrong with this hotel and it would be one of my strongest recommendations for hotels to stay at in Tokyo as a whole. Yep, it’s that good!
