They originally started out mainly as <strong>cat and dog cafes<\/strong>, but today there are <strong>many different<\/strong> animal cafes available in Japan. But, what is the point of these cafes and why do they exist? The amazing yet equally crazy idea, had business owners around the world inspired; and now you can even find them in the United Kingdom.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, <strong><em>why <\/em><\/strong>were these animal cafes created, and what was the thinking behind them? The first-ever animal cafe was a cat cafe which was located in <a href=\"https:\/\/catcafesd.com\/about\/\"><strong>Taiwan<\/strong><\/a>. It was opened back in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Animal_cafe#:~:text=The%20first%20animal%20caf%C3%A9%20was,is%20very%20popular%20and%20familiar.\"><strong>1998<\/strong><\/a> and became <strong>extremely popular<\/strong> with Japanese tourists. The tourists then went back home with all of their inspiration and did what the Japanese do best&#8230;completely reinvent and make it 20x more creative. This is with no offence to the original animal cafe, of course. However, animal cafes have come a long way since then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Animal Cafes were originally created in Japan so that the people who couldn\u2019t own their own pets, could still receive the experience and benefits that having a furry friend can provide.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a city with such a huge population as Tokyo, the <strong>majority <\/strong>of residents are forced to live in apartments and condos. This is because it would simply be <strong><em>impossible <\/em><\/strong>to provide every single family with their own personal house. The building space, facilities and finances would never allow this to be possible.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, <strong>unfortunately<\/strong>, with the <strong>rules <\/strong>of certain apartment buildings, <strong>pets are not allowed<\/strong>. Of course, this isn\u2019t for every single apartment building, but a lot of them do not allow owning pets.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Another problem<\/strong> that stops people from owning pets in Tokyo, is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/news\/2012\/03\/25\/national\/media-national\/is-japan-as-busy-as-it-first-seems\/\"><strong>busy lifestyle<\/strong><\/a>. From working busy long days to spending hours each week on the packed public transport, life in Tokyo is <strong>hectic<\/strong>, to say the least. Great! But, <strong><em>how <\/em><\/strong>exactly do they work, and <strong>what <\/strong>should you expect when visiting one?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For starters, before you enter almost <em>any <\/em>animal cafe in Tokyo, you can expect an <strong>entry fee<\/strong>. This makes it just like any other tourist attraction around the world, where you actually have to pay an initial fee to enter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Once you are in<\/strong>, the experience can <strong>vary <\/strong>based on what cafe you visit, and what animals they have living there.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some cafes <strong><em>may <\/em><\/strong>provide <strong>complimentary refreshments<\/strong> and hot beverages as included in the entry fee, while others may charge an extra cost for these. If this is a strong deciding factor of which animal cafe you visit, I <strong>strongly recommend<\/strong> that you research the cafe before visiting, to avoid any surprises once you\u2019re there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In terms of the animals, you shouldn\u2019t be expected to pay additional costs to actually hold and cuddle the animals. <strong>This should be included in your entry fee<\/strong>. Of course, it is difficult to say for every single animal cafe in Tokyo, but if you stick to the most popular cafes, this <strong><em>won\u2019t <\/em><\/strong>be an issue that you need to worry about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>However<\/strong>, if you wish to get that little bit closer to the animals, some of the pet cafes provide little treats that <strong>you can buy<\/strong> to give to your new furry friend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Things to do<\/strong> in the cafes include computers for <strong>internet surfing<\/strong>, <strong>manga <\/strong>to read, <strong>anime <\/strong>to watch, couches to chill on and more depending on the particular cafe you choose. After all, the aim of these cafes is to <strong>simulate <\/strong>you being at home with your own pet, in a city where it is difficult to do so!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The animals usually have certain hours of every day in which they are all fed side by side. The reviews of this cafe are a mix of positive and negative. However, the visitors of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harinezumi-cafe.com\/en\/\">Hedgehog Cafe HARRY<\/a> can say otherwise.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This unique pet cafe allows people to pick up and hold hedgehogs that apparently have all kinds of different personalities!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only that, if you like a certain hedgehog <strong><em>that <\/em><\/strong>much, the cafe is always open to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripadvisor.co.uk\/Attraction_Review-g1066456-d12122986-Reviews-Hedgehog_Cafe_HARRY_Harajuku-Shibuya_Tokyo_Tokyo_Prefecture_Kanto.html\"><strong>selling them<\/strong><\/a> to its visitors.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s important to note that many people find hedgehog cafes a <strong>cruel <\/strong>idea, due to the natural environment of hedgehogs being dark. It depends on the kind of animal and how well the cafe has done at replicating their natural environment. For example, <strong>dogs <\/strong>would probably find it <strong>more comfortable<\/strong> to live in this environment over owls, who are <strong>nocturnal <\/strong>and <strong>used to being in the wild<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It really comes down to who you are as a person and what you believe is right and wrong for these animals. It\u2019s just one of those topics that have split opinions <strong>no matter what<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is understandable how these cafes can be seen as a cash grab.
